Welcome to Vilnius, European capital of culture 2009 !

1.000.000 visitors can't be wrong. The smallest of the three Baltic capitals is also the most visited, with an amazing number of people that have chosen to stroll around its streets in 2009. And with good reasons indeed. Vilnius is said to have the largest Old Town in Eastern Europe, and thanks to its beauty and elegance the city was recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The perfectly preserved Old Town is a medieval pearl laid down in the open air, filled with elegant buildings, cobbled lanes, squares, majestic churches and monasteries. But above all, what makes the historic centre of Vilnius so peculiar in comparison with other European capitals is the urban pattern, which has originally developed around a wooden fort on top of a hill, and has lately grew bigger and bigger, occupying the surrounding areas. The urban development had to face this odd topography, so that even buildings and streets were built following the bends and the irregularities of the ground.
